There is a belief among christians that we are meant to study the Bible alone.

But for the large majority of church history, believers gathered to read, discuss, and receive teaching around the scriptures in community.

In our world today, anyone can own their own copy of the Bible. We can read it, interact with it and glean insights and knowledge all on our own. What a blessing!

But studying scripture on our own can be actually lead to feelings of confusion and frustration, leaving us discouraged on our journey of faith.

And that all makes sense! After all, we are reading a collection of complicated texts translated from multiple ancient languages about cultures most of us aren't familiar with.

How do we navigate this challenge?

How might Jesus have coached his followers about how to read and understand the Scriptures?

In order to deepen our experience of interacting with Scripture, we need access to two things that were commonplace for Jesus and his disciples:

  1. Read the Bible in Sync as a Community. When we read the same passages together, we can talk about the readings together, helping each other interpret their meanings while encouraging one another toward applying each passage to our lives.
  2. Gain Access to the Gift of Teaching. We desperately need access to this gift in the Body that can provide the correct context for a particular passage, provide a deeper understanding of a given word, or bring clarity about a particular literary genre in the Bible that we've never encountered before.
